First edition of this incisive study of the psychological impact of warfare, by the doctor and close friend of Sassoon. W. H. R. Rivers (1864-1922) first met Sassoon at the Craiglockhart psychiatric hospital in 1917: the poet had arrived in Scotland after circulating a letter critical of the British conduct of the war. Rivers, a prominent psychologist and anthropologist, remained friends with Sassoon until his sudden death in 1922: Sassoon later included him in the Memoirs of George Sherston, and their relationship was further recounted by Pat Barker in the Regeneration Trilogy.
