Interim Report of the Riot Inquiry Committee. [Together with] Final Report of the Riot Inquiry Committee. Scarce official reports into the large-scale anti-Muslim, anti-Indian riots of 1938, identifying major police failings and blaming the press for distributing inflammatory reports and photographs. These copies are presumed to be second printings, Interim Report one of 500 copies issued in May 1939 and Final Report one of 250 printed in June."More than many riots, the Burmese disorders of 1938 engulfed large parts of the country, from Tenasserim Division in the southeast all the way to Sagaing Division in the north. In a relatively short time, the killing spread over distances reckoned in the hundreds of miles. From end to end, the violence spanned 500 miles or more, a fact the more remarkable for the remoteness of some of the affected areas from major communications links" (Horowitz, p. 199).The first printing of the Final Report, numbering 1,500 copies, was issued in March 1939, following the report's submission at the end of February. We assume that the Interim Report was first printed soon after its December 1938 completion. All printings are seldom encountered in commerce.
