Drawn from papers in the Proceedings of the Society of Psychical Research, it focuses on hypnotism, hysteria, and multiple personality disorders, "those branches of medical psychology which have thrown most light on the problems of psychical research" (preface).Mitchell (1869-1944) was a member of both the British Psychoanalytical Society and the Society for Psychical Research and was elected as president of the latter in the year of this book's publication. Albert Willem van Renterghem (1846-1939) was one of the most influential Dutch proponents of psychoanalysis and the founder of the first psychotherapy clinic in Amsterdam, established in 1887. "Attracted by the philosophy of psychic monism and disappointed by official medical science, [he] felt that the mind played a greater role in curing and healing than official medicine could acknowledge" (Bulhof, p. 209).
