The Burma Police Manual Revised and updated edition, the fourth overall, with rare supplements. Of the 3,000 copies printed, WorldCat shows only two institutional survivals (British Library and Academia Sinica).The manual was first published in 1894, under the authority of Major (later Colonel) Solomon C. F. Peile (1855-1932), inspector-general of police and a veteran of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. By the 1920s, the policing remit had passed to Lieutenant-Colonel Roderick William Macdonald DSO (1881-1959), likewise an Indian Army veteran, who retired in 1932 to grow apples in Essex. The release of this edition coincided with Eric Blair's service in the Indian Imperial Police.The supplements, each issued in a run of around 3,000 copies, make 287 amendments to language and procedures.
