Pacific Overtures. Typescript, signed by Stephen Sondheim, John Weidman, and Hal Prince, presenting Weidman's original script before Sondheim started work on the project. This is a remarkable survival and a textual witness to understanding Sondheim's craft. The show opened on Broadway on 11 January 1976, produced and directed by Harold Prince.The script comprises a title page, a prologue (22 pages), Act 1 (37 pages) and Act 2 (57 pages). There are five scenes in the Prologue, four scenes in Act 1, and seven scenes in Act 2. The piece was restructured into a two act musical (with 11 scenes in Act 1, and seven scenes in Act 2).This copy also carries ink stamps identifying it as formerly part of the "Harold Prince Collection" from the Billy Rose Theatre Collection at the New York Public Library. There is a stamp noting this is a duplicate, and therefore, deaccessioned. It was signed after release from the library for Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the Sunday Express's film and theatre critic, and whose various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). The title page includes the name and address of the producer, and a space for a copy number to be added. In this example the space is left blank.
