The Thing of It Is. Screenplay for an unproduced film, with "screenplay by William Goldman from his novel", and "song and other musical moments by Stephen Sondheim". The idea of filming The Thing Of It came from Robert Redford shortly after he had worked with Goldman on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.There were protracted negotiations and numerous changes of cast and director: "it's a movie that never got made. Not remotely unusual. What made this experience unique for me is that this was a movie that not only almost but didn't happen - it didn't happen twice" (Goldman, p. 191).Sondheim contributed the song "No, Mary Ann". Sondheim notes that the song is "supposed to be like 'Hello, Dolly': the big hit song from the big hit show that you can't get away from" (Singer).
