Inherit the Wind. A New Play. Two copies of the rehearsal script of the Broadway version, one signed by the authors on the title page, the other inscribed to Clive Hirschhorn on the title page, "Love to Clive from Jerry (a.k.a. Jerome Lawrence)". The play concerns the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, although the writers later explained that the work was intended to criticize McCarthyism in the 1950s.Jerome Lawrence (1915-2004) formed a writing partnership with Robert E. Lee (1918-1994) during the Second World War, and the pair became prolific writers for radio. Inherit the Wind was their first play for the live theatre and was written to highlight the political persecution of left-wing supporters in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. The play fictionalizes the trial of John T. Scopes in 1925 for teaching human evolution in contravention of a Tennessee state law. Inherit the Wind was first presented in Dallas at the beginning of 1955. The Broadway rights were then acquired by producer Herman Shumlin, and the Broadway production ran 21 April 1955 until 22 June 1957. The text was first published by Random House in September 1955, and a film adaptation was released in 1960, directed by Stanley Kramer.There are two duplicate scripts here.
