Do I Hear a Waltz? A script, inscribed by the lyricist on the title page, "To Jan Cook - Stephen Sondheim". It is believed that the recipient was a senior executive at Polygram, the music record label. The script differs slightly from the libretto published by Random House in 1966.The script comprises title page, copyright page, listing of characters, listing of running order, together with the script of Act 1 (72 pages), and Act 2 (43 pages). For publication many of the stage directions were more descriptive. In the second scene, for example, "They have started out but now Leona, her dress changed, shoulder bad in place, rushes out" is published as "They are all starting to leave when Leona, her dress changed and shoulder bag in place, rushes out carrying two bottles". There are occasional changes to the script. Asked how she is at the beginning of the second scene, for example, Leona originally replied "Very bene. I fell in a canal". This is published as "Not so bene. I fell in a canal".The musical opened on Broadway on 18 March 1965 and ran for 220 performances. This script includes a copyright notice dated 1966, and this suggests that the script was issued after the Broadway show had closed, but before Random House published the script in book form.
