Original 1864 edition of The Suppressed Book About Slavery!, published in New York by Carleton. The title page states that the work was prepared for publication in 1857 but “never published until the present time.” Civil War-era work concerning American slavery, abolition, slaveholding and the political and social conditions surrounding slavery in the United States. Includes striking period illustrations, including the frontispiece “Human Flesh at Auction” depicting a slave auction, as well as “The Coffle Gang” and other illustrations relating to the subject. Original embossed cloth hardcover binding. Condition: Antique used condition. Covers and spine show substantial fading, discoloration, rubbing and edge wear. There is notable cloth loss and deterioration at the top of the spine. Corners are worn. Interior pages show age toning, scattered foxing, spotting and staining. Illustrations show age-related toning. Completeness of all pages and illustrations has not been independently verified. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition and contents.
