GEMINI #1 1982 Magnum Studio Gay Magazine Castro San Francisco Premiere Issue

GEMINI, Premiere Issue — “A Presentation of Magnum Studio.” Copyright 1982 by Magnum Studio. Distribution by Buy-Rite Magazine, 4242 Lankershim, North Hollywood, California. Cover price $8.50. The debut issue opens with “Episode One: Castro Encounter,” shot on location in San Francisco’s Castro district. Beyond the models, the layout carries real documentary photography of the neighborhood — the Castro Theatre facade and marquee, Castro Street with its storefronts, signage, and parked cars, and streetscape views up toward the hills. The marquee in one frame advertises a Warner Brothers tribute and a Brazilian film festival, dating the shoot precisely. That makes this more than a photo magazine. It’s a street-level record of the Castro in 1982, made by people who lived there, in the last months before the AIDS crisis reshaped the neighborhood entirely. Photographs of the district from this exact window are scarcer than the era’s model photography, and they’re what draws archival and local-history buyers. Condition: Fair vintage, well-read copy. Front cover heavily creased along the spine edge with chipping and surface loss, corner wear, soiling throughout, small round retail dot at upper left. Back cover has pronounced diagonal creasing, scuffing, and a retail price sticker. Interior clean and bright, fully intact and bound. Photographed exactly as received. Priced honestly to reflect cover condition. More gems drop daily — vintage LGBT+ magazines, covers, and dificult to find
