The preface is the reason this book matters beyond its photography. Written in the publisher’s own voice, it is a sustained, sardonic attack on postal censorship: it anticipates the book being banned and seized, recounts what happened to the previous volume in the series, notes that suppression proved better publicity than money could buy, and draws an explicit line to the book burnings of the 1930s. Very few surviving publications from this period state the case against censorship this directly, in print, while the censors were still active. It is a primary document of the fight, not just an artifact of it. The preceding volume, The Male Nude and Twelve Cameras (1963), is named on the half-title.  Photography throughout is studio and interior work in the northern European style — softer and more domestic than the American physique idiom of the same years.
