First edition, signed limited issue, presentation copy from Winston Churchill to Mary, Duchess of Marlborough, inscribed by him on the initial binder's blank, "To Mary from Winston Christmas 1934".Mary (1900-1961) was the wife of the 10th Duke of Marlborough. Churchill, grandson of the 7th Duke, was for several years next in line to the dukedom, until the 9th Duke had a son. He published a four-volume biography of the 1st Duke from 1933 to 1938.The leading Irish novelist George Moore was a friend of Winston's mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, and had often been a guest in her house when Winston was young. This is his translation of the second-century pastoral romance by Longus. This copy is number 564 of 1,280 signed copies; a trade edition was issued the same year.
