Oliver Cromwell. First edition, handsomely bound, with an autograph letter signed from Morley tipped-in to the front free endpaper. The Kate Greenaway-designed bookplate of the letter's recipient, Victoria Alexandrina Mary Cecil Herbert (1874-1957), is on the front pastedown.Liberal grandee John Morley (1838-1923) was one of the leading British politicians of the late Victorian and Edwardian period. In the letter, 20 July 1905, Morley writes to decline Victoria's invitation, citing prior commitments. Victoria was the daughter of three-time prime minister, the Marquess of Salisbury, and a prominent member of high society.
