Frontiers and Wars. First collected edition, attractively bound, of Churchill's autobiographical accounts of his early adventures in the Siege of Malakand, the Mahdist War, and the Boer War.The edition includes four of his earliest books: The Malakand Field Force, The River War, London to Ladysmith, and Ian Hamilton's March (first published 1898, 1899, 1900, & 1900 respectively). Additional maps were commissioned for this edition, and the texts were abridged: "The abridging is ruthless but effective. What remains are the backgrounds to the wars and the chief features of them, culled and packaged to fit a volume of fewer than 600 pages. As such it constitutes a new text, which most Churchill collectors are anxious to own... the ideal introduction to Churchill the Victorian war historian" (Langworth, p. 340).
