The New "Examen". First edition with Churchill's introduction, trade issue, handsomely bound.In 1861, the barrister John Paget published The New "Examen" or an inquiry into the evidence relating to certain passages in Lord Macaulay's History. He defended the Duke of Marlborough, Churchill's ancestor, from Macaulay's charge of treachery during the Anglo-Dutch defeat at the Battle of Camaret (1694). Lord Rosebery showed Churchill a copy of the then-obscure work, and he was delighted. Churchill applied Paget's case in his Marlborough (1933-38), much of which aimed to counter Macaulay's entrenched animadversions. Churchill assisted this republication and contributed a seven-page introduction, in which he praised the cogency of Paget's arguments and his literary style. He bemoaned that Paget "was swept aside by the opinion of his time" and hoped that his book can be "rescued from oblivion". There was also a signed limited issue.
