TOLKIEN COLLECTORS ❁ To the Chapel Perilous ❁ 1° edition 1955 Naomi Mitchison George Allen and Unwin In 1955, on the back cover of this book, the publisher George Allen & Unwin promoted the release of the volumes of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings"; the third volume, "The Return of the King", was published that very year. For us collectors and Tolkien enthusiasts, the importance of this book lies not merely in the publicity it generated for Tolkien’s own masterpiece, but in the various connections between the author and Professor Tolkien. Mitchison wrote a review of *The Lord of the Rings* for the *New Statesman*, and the British publisher included her comment on the dust jacket flaps of the first edition: “It is timeless and will go on and on.” It was in connection with this very book that Mitchison asked Tolkien—through their shared publisher—to provide a blurb for inclusion in the volume. Upon receiving the request, Tolkien was on the verge of departing for Italy and thus declined the invitation; however, his true reason was his disapproval of Mitchison’s work, as he explained in a letter to the publisher.
