The Importance of Being Earnest. First edition thus, one of 1,200 copies printed privately for presentation. Alexander played an integral role in the history of Earnest, overseeing its "brilliant" original staging in 1895 (ODNB), advising Wilde on the text, and playing the part of Jack Worthing. The run at the St James's was cut short by Wilde's trial and subsequent disgrace, but the 1909 revival was a success.This copy has an ownership signature dated the day of the production on the front free endpaper.
