Description Six consecutive original-wrapper issues of The Atlantic Monthly, January through June 1873, comprising the first half of Volume XXXI and containing the complete six-part serialization of William Dean Howells’s A Chance Acquaintance. Howells’s novel runs continuously through all six numbers. The June issue also retains a contemporary James R. Osgood & Co. advertisement for the newly published book edition of A Chance Acquaintance, priced at $1.50, giving this run an especially satisfying publication-history connection between serialization and book issue. The group contains substantial additional literary content.
