Three Visits to America. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title, "by Emily Faithfull. Gorton Hall. Dec. 9th / 84", and with an early inked gift inscription to head of the same page ("To Mrs. Lange with R. Peacock's kind regards").In this work, Faithfull (1835-1895), a women's activist, records her lecture tours of America and presents her views on employment, education, and women's legal status, including suffrage.Faithfull counted among her friends and supporters Richard Peacock of Gorton Hall (1820- 1889), one of the founders of Beyer, Peacock & Company, the Manchester locomotive manufacturers, to whom Three Visits to America is dedicated. The Mrs Lange to whom this copy was later gifted, either by Peacock or his son Ralph, was likely the wife of Hermann Ludwig Lange (1837-1892), the locomotive designer and sometime joint manager of Beyer, Peacock & Company.
