Juliet Bredon (1881-1937) grew up in China as the daughter of Sir Robert Edward Bredon, the deputy inspector-general of the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service. The family were caught up in the Boxer Uprising and the Siege of the Legations in Beijing during the summer of 1900. She wrote a number of books on China, and Peking (first published in 1920 and revised in 1922) was by far her most successful. In addition to new material, this third edition adds another map.
