First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title "Alvilde, with love from Nancy", with Alvilde Lees-Milne's ownership inscription on the front free endpaper. Mitford and the celebrated gardener Lees-Milne (1909-1994) were close friends from the time of the latter's first marriage (which was dissolved in 1950) until the former's death.
