Hidden for a Thousand Days. First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Toronto Jan 3 - 1968, To Dr. A. A. Appel, sincerely, Sara Veffer". This moving narrative relates a Jewish family's survival during the Nazi occupation of Holland, in which Sara Veffer led her husband and six children into hiding."The Room was twelve feet long by eleven feet wide. It was bare, it was cold; but it was a refuge" (p. 1). Through the resilience and leadership of Sara, the Veffers remained hidden, found food, and outlasted the persecution. They emigrated to Toronto in 1947, where a decade later Sara shared her story with the broadcaster Ray Sonin.Adolph Asher Appel (1907-1995) was a Jewish physician in Toronto.
