A Winter in Arabia. First edition of Stark's account of her second expedition to the Hadhramaut in search of the ancient cities of Southern Arabia. "Despite her significant achievements as a traveller and her less well-known feats as a mountaineer, it is for her evocative and reflective prose that she is remembered" (ODNB).After a first visit to Arabia in 1935 to look for old trade routes, Stark returned in 1937-8 accompanied by two British women - the archaeologist Gertrude Caton-Thompson (unnamed in the book) and the geologist Elinor "Alinur" Wight Gardner - for a dig sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society and Lord Wakefield. All three women were beset by illness, likely malaria, and had to rest at Al Mukalla, where Stark then began her trip across the Hadhramaut on camels accompanied by Bedouin, before joining the sultan's caravan.
