The House in Paris. First edition of the author's fifth novel, inspired by her affair with the scholar Humphry House. The novel received high praise. Virginia Woolf commented that "she liked it best of all Elizabeth's books", while her publisher Victor Gollancz stating that the book was "one of not more than half a dozen contemporary novels that I have really enjoyed during the past ten years" (quoted in Glendinning, p. 116 and 109).
