STARK, Freya.
Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington
Baghdad Sketches. First edition of Stark's first book, published three years after she moved to Baghdad. She took to wearing Arab dress "and as a result was largely shunned by the British expatriate community" (Howgego), but, upon her return to London in 1933, her reputation as a serious traveller was cemented with the Back grant from the Royal Geographical Society and the Burton medal of the Royal Asiatic Society, the first time the medal was awarded to a woman.
