The Story of the Russian School. First edition in English, inscribed in Russian by the author on the title page, "To my dear friend Fedya, warmly from N. Legat, London 1936", and additionally signed on the frontispiece.Hailing from a family of dancers, Legat (1869-1937) was the creator of the Legat System of Classical Ballet. He became a soloist with the Russian Imperial Ballet in 1888 immediately following his graduation, and later became a ballet master there. He settled in England in 1926 where he opened a ballet school and taught his own system of dancing. His pupils included Ninette de Valois and Margot Fonteyn.Dukes states in his foreword that Legat was "the foremost teacher of the Russian school of dancing since the death of Christian Johannsen" and that "the roots of the Russian school were planted by his predecessors, but in Nicolas Legat we have the trunk".
