J. Dennis by Alec H. Chisholm. Published by Georgian House, Melbourne in 1946, the first year of publication, this copy is made especially collectible by its handwritten presentation inscription from author Alec H. Chisholm to Rev. C. Irving Benson, later Sir Irving Benson, dated September 1946. A significant Melbourne association Sir Clarence Irving Benson (1897–1980) was a prominent Melbourne Methodist minister, broadcaster, journalist and bibliophile. He served as president of the Library Association of Victoria and became chairman of the trustees of the Public Library of Victoria in 1946 — the same year this book was presented to him by Chisholm. Chisholm himself was an important Australian journalist, author, naturalist and literary figure. This is therefore more than simply an autographed copy: it is an appealing presentation/association copy linking two notable figures in Melbourne’s literary and cultural life.
