Last Year’s Broken Toys Barbara Ker Wilson 1962 SCARCE HC DJ WWII A striking and genuinely scarce 1960s children’s book with an extraordinary original wartime dust jacket. Last Year’s Broken Toys by Barbara Ker Wilson was published by Constable & Company, London in 1962. Early hardcover copies are difficult to find, particularly retaining the original illustrated dust jacket. The jacket is immediately arresting, incorporating dramatic Second World War imagery — servicemen, civilians and a prominent swastika representing Nazi Germany — giving this edition considerable visual and historical interest. A scarce early edition First published in 1962, Last Year’s Broken Toys is a wartime novel for younger readers by respected children’s author and editor Barbara Ker Wilson. The story was subsequently published in America under the alternative title In Love and War. Later paperback editions do appear, but this early 1962 Constable hardcover with its original illustrated dust jacket is considerably harder to find. Australian provenance This copy has a lovely piece of Melbourne history. It retains its original Mentone Girls’ High School presentation plate, recording that the book was presented to: Susan Smith — III A — 1963 and donated by Mrs M. Pont, with the Head Mistress’s name/signature below. The presentation dates from just one year after publication and gives this particular copy a documented Melbourne provenance.
