Hazlitt deemed the work "the most uncompromising and the most rigorously reasoned statement of the case for capitalism that has yet appeared" (p. 119).Appearing as the post-war Keynesian consensus took hold, Human Action took as its foundation the belief that a free-market economy could outdistance any government-planned system and safeguard the basic cultural values of its civilization. The work failed to secure a wide readership on first publication, but coming two years after von Mises helped found the Mont Pelerin Society, it proved a potent influence among the businessmen and academics who formed the nucleus of the libertarian movement in the United States.
