Original artwork for The Princess and the Goblin: "So Up She Went, Stair After Stair". Reproduced, as one of eight colour plates, within the artist's edition of George MacDonald's influential fantasy The Princess and the Goblin, published by J. M. Dent in 1949. The illustration shows Irene, the princess, ascending a staircase to her great-great-grandmother from chapter XI.Charles Folkard (1878-1910) attracted significant attention with his early illustrations to The Swiss Family Robinson in 1910. He enjoyed a successful career with A. & C. Black and illustration work included Grimm's Fairy Tales (1911), Aesop's Fables (1913), The Arabian Nights (1913), and Songs from Alice in Wonderland (1921). In 1915 he joined the staff of the Daily Mail where he created that newspaper's strip cartoon "Teddy Tail".Towards the end of his career, Folkard worked on two of MacDonald's works: the present book, and the sequel, The Princess and Curdie. Both Tolkien and C. S. Lewis were influenced by MacDonald's books.
