Guys and Dolls. Pre-production script of the classic Broadway show (later subtitled "A Musical Fable of Broadway") sent to the influential scenic and lighting designer Jo Mielziner, accompanied by a letter of apology from the director George S. Kaufman. The text is significantly different to the licensed version and reveals Frank Loesser's musical in an early textual state.Mielziner has signed the title page, provided his address ("1 W. 72, NY"), and noted a date of 11 September 1950. Two scenes (Act 1, Scene 7, and Act 2, Scene 6) are dated by Mielziner 25 September 1950. Mielziner's name also appears on the front wrapper. The script comprises a title page (1 leaf), Act 1, scenes 1 to 10 (64 leaves), a divisional title (1 leaf), and Act 2, scenes 1 to 6 (28 leaves).The show had a Philadelphia tryout during October 1950. It opened on Broadway on 24 November 1950 at the 46th Street Theatre with scenic and lighting design by Mielziner. It ran for 1,200 performances and won five Tony Awards at the 1951 ceremony, including the award for Best Musical.Mielziner (1901-1976) studied set design in Paris, Vienna, and Berlin. He worked for the New York Theatre Guild in 1923, before making his debut as a designer in 1927. He designed the scenery for more than 200 productions and was one of the most influential theatre designers of the American stage.
