Candide. Vocal score inscribed by both the composer and the lyricist on the title page, "For Stuart Wright, Best wishes Leonard Bernstein 1981" and "for Stuart, Dick Wilbur 1981". The recipient (b. 1948) is a teacher, bibliographer, publisher, author, and collector. Most of his collection was given to East Carolina University between 2010 and 2020.Candide was first performed in 1956 with the book by Lillian Hellman. It was not a success and was re-worked in 1973 with direction by Harold Prince and the book by Hugh Wheeler. The revival enjoyed some success and the work is now a staple of the American stage. This version of the vocal score presents the original version with Hellman named on the title page.
