Large-format mid-19th-century Bible atlas by Sidney E. Morse, noted American cartographer and pioneer of cerographic map printing. The atlas contains large maps relating to the biblical world, including: General Map of the Countries Mentioned in the Bible Map of the Journeyings of the Israelites Map of Palestine Plan of Jerusalem and Environs Map of the Travels of the Apostles The maps include outline and partial hand coloring, detailed topography, cities and settlements, tribal divisions, routes, and other geographical information associated with the Old and New Testaments. Sidney E. Morse was an important early American mapmaker and innovator in cerography, a wax-engraving process developed to make detailed maps more economical to reproduce. This is the 1856 issue, retaining its original printed paper wrappers. Condition: Good overall for this fragile publication. Original wrappers are heavily worn, soiled, creased, chipped, and split along portions of the spine and fold. Interior maps show edge wear, tears, fold splits, creasing, toning, and occasional chips, particularly at the central folds and margins. Several tears extend into the printed map areas, as shown in the photographs. Maps remain generally legible and visually attractive.
