Temperance - or Prohibition? First edition, first printing. Hearst newspapers ran a $25,000 Temperance Contest in 1929 to determine the public's views of prohibition as it neared its tenth anniversary. This book distils the results of the 71,248 contributions, most of whom supported repeal.It prints the proposal of the winner (a New York City judge who called for continued prohibition of hard liquor but allowing wine and beer). Heart initially backed that proposal in his newspaper empire, but within a few months lost patience and advocated the complete repeal of the 18th Amendment.
