Muir played a leading role in the campaign that led to the establishment of Yosemite National Park in 1890, making this work a remnant of his passion and advocacy for the preservation of the American wilderness. Muir was a bold explorer, climbing to the summit of Yosemite Falls to observe the waters and recounting with fear and exhilaration his experience of an earthquake. The work is illustrated with photographic plates after early views of the valley, complementing Muir's detailed descriptions of its geology, flora, and glaciers.
