LIFE Magazine — July 5, 1943 This was Vol. 15, No. 1, dated July 5, 1943, and ran 128 pages. It is a particularly strong WWII issue because it contains LIFE’s first publication of photographs identifying U.S. combat dead, along with coverage of the developing Allied invasion of Sicily. The major WWII feature: U.S. combat dead Page 15, “Killed in Action?” is the standout historical feature. LIFE published photographs and information concerning American servicemen killed in combat. The issue is actually listed by collectors under the description “U.S. Combat Dead.” This is significant because LIFE was increasingly pushing against the restrictions surrounding publication of photographs of American battlefield casualties. Other important WWII material General Douglas MacArthur — p. 104: A substantial profile of MacArthur, written by George Johnston. This is one of the more collectible aspects of the issue. U.S. planes bomb Nauru — p. 120: Coverage of the American air war in the Pacific. Artist Fischer’s “Cruise of the Campbell” — p. 57: Anton Otto Fischer, LIFE’s artist and former Coast Guard artist, depicts the experiences of the cutter Campbell in wartime submarine operations. Detroit Race Riot — p. 93: Coverage of the serious June 1943 racial violence in Detroit, which left dozens dead and hundreds injured.
