Autograph letter signed, refusing to disclose the government's financial plans. Churchill writes to Arthur Faulkner, chairman of the Oldham Conservative Association, apparently responding to a request for insider information: "There is not the slightest chance of the financial proposals of the Govt. being revealed to anyone before they are publicly brought before Parliament". Churchill adds "the resolutions necessary to enforce them are always passed before the discussion, in order to prevent the increased duty from being evaded". He ends on an unrelated note: "The death of the two clerks was v. sad; and no doubt the accommodation left much to be desired".Churchill was elected for Oldham in the 1900 general election. Though this marked the beginning of his political career, Churchill's relationship with the Oldham Conservative Association soon deteriorated. Churchill lost the Association's support as it turned toward protectionism, and he left the Conservative Party for the Liberals in 1904.Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections.
