Secretarial letter to John William Gulland, after a speech to the Young Scots. A letter dictated by Churchill to his secretary Annette Anning, written entirely in her hand, and signed by her in Churchill's name: "I enjoyed very much the pleasure of addressing the audience of Young Scots and I was much impressed by their business like appearance". Gulland (1864-1920) later served as Liberal MP for Dumfries Burghs from 1906 to 1918, and was Chief Government Whip from 1915 to 1918. He was president of the Young Scots, where Churchill delivered a lecture on 2 February in defence of free trade and against Joseph Chamberlain's protectionist campaign.
