Despite never meeting in person, Bloom became fast friends with Le Guin in the final months of her life. He had previously remarked that "Le Guin, more than Tolkien, has raised fantasy into high literature, for our time" and, after her death, contributed the introduction to her Collected Poems.Loosely inserted into this copy is a printed email exchange between Le Guin and Bloom, dated December 2017. It begins with Bloom's praise: "The winter solstice unsettled me. But it may be your astonishing poems. They are very different from the earlier ones. You are on the verge of a new power".
