OIL HILL The Town That Cities Service Built El Dorado Kansas. SIGNED by the author Lawrence P. Klintworth. Names of people that lived in El Dorado are indexed in back for easy genealogical research. In the early 1900s, oil drilling was booming in Central Kansas. Cities Service set up the town of Oil Hill two miles from El Dorado and at its peak, there were company offices, warehouses, 330 homes, a fire station, livery stables, a pipe yard and lumber yards. This book documents that early history and showcases lots of vintage photos of Oil Hill. About the Lawrence P. Klintworth was the retired news editor of The El Dorado (Kansas) Times by which newspaper he was employed for nearly 35 years. He also worked for William Allen White's Emporia Gazette as a reporter and editorial writer for a period of five years (with time out for naval duty during World War II). A native Kansan, Klintworth attended Wichita High School, Friends University for three years and was graduated from Florida Southern University at Lakeland, Fla., in 1928. Soon afterward he went to work as a reporter for The Wichita Eagle and also was employed in the Wichita bureau of the Associated Press. Klintworth was the author of several books relating to various phases of Butler County history. All were published by the Butler County Historical Society.
