It is a follow up to Wood's highly popular autobiography From Midshipman to Field Marshal (1906), which went through four editions in the month of publication. "The career of Field Marshal Sir Evelyn Wood VC was nothing short of extraordinary... he joined the Royal Navy and fought with distinction in the Crimea where he was badly wounded. He then switched to the army and saw further action in India, the Gold Coast, the Cape, Zululand, the Transvaal, Egypt and the Sudan... along with Wolseley and Sir Frederick Roberts, [he is] one of the three great British generals of the late Victorian period" (Saul David).Provenance: Herbert Louis Wade (1855-1923) of Honiley Hall, Warwickshire, with his fine armorial bookplate (dated 1920) and ownership inscription on the front free endpaper. Wade was a founder of the family firm of iron and steel merchants and construction engineers. Like Wood he was a keen fox hunter, a member of the committee of the North Warwickshire Hunt.
