Serbia The Land of "Sutra" (To-morrow). First edition of Dick Holland's memoir of the years she spent working with the Red Cross during the First World War. This work is uncommon institutionally, WorldCat recording only four copies.Holland volunteered as a nurse, ambulance driver, and stretcher bearer and was stationed in France, Belgium, and the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service in Serbia. She recounts working on the front line and in hospitals, and describes travelling by boat, motorcar, and train while maintaining an individualistic charm and optimism. Holland named this book Serbia at the suggestion of her friends, who thought the latter chapter to be "the most interesting and contains more exciting stories than the other two" (preface). This is possibly a presentation copy, inscribed on the title page by one Marcia Lynch: "given to me by the author Miss Holland on November 19th 1936 when I went to show her my children's stories she says that she will help to get them published".
