Offered here is a signed first edition of Song by Brigit Pegeen Kelly (BOA Editions, 1995), the collection that won the 1994 Lamont Poetry Selection from the Academy of American Poets — a distinguished award given annually to an American poet’s second book. Kelly’s debut, To the Place of Trumpets, was selected by James Merrill for the Yale Series of Younger Poets, and her signed work is genuinely hard to find on the market; she was not a frequent presence on the signing circuit, and she passed away in 2016, permanently limiting the pool of signed material. This trade paperback first edition, first printing is not price-clipped, with the original $14.95 cover price intact. The cover features a striking red-and-black woodcut of a goat’s head amid dense foliage, a direct visual reference to the collection’s title poem, “Song” — one of Kelly’s most celebrated and anthologized works, a haunting narrative of a child’s pet goat that becomes something closer to myth by the poem’s end.
