E. E. Cummings: The Art of His Poetry. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to E. E. Cummings and his wife on the front free endpaper, "For Marion & E. E. Cummings, conceived, written, and inscribed with love from Zelda & Norman, April 25, 1960". Though not marked as such, the book was later acquired by David Jonathan Grossman (1922-1990), Cummings's French translator.In 1947, the Harvard graduate Norman Friedman (1925-2014) wrote his honours thesis on Cummings's poetry and began a correspondence with the poet. Cummings obligingly gave Friedman a stack of 175 worksheets, allowing the scholar a rare insight into the poet's creative process. Friedman presents this insight in Chapter Five: Creation.
