The recipient Storm Jameson, who was the first woman to become president of the British chapter of International PEN, had many of her works published by Canfield, the president of Harper & Brothers.A highly prodigious writer with a "mania against domestic life" (ODNB), Jameson (1891-1986) worked as a publisher, journalist, playwright, and translator. Much of her career in the interwar period was informed by her intimate involvement in campaigning against fascism and social injustice. She was a founding member of the Peace Pledge Union in 1934, though she later reluctantly supported the war against Germany in 1939. Jameson married the historian and author Guy Chapman (1889-1972), to whom the book label is also inscribed.Canfield (1897-1986) was a dominant figure in 20th-century publishing; in this work, he provides his reflections on the industry and recounts his interactions with many of his famous clients, including J. B. Priestley and Julian Huxley. The present work was published as part of a series celebrating the recipients of the A. S. W. Rosenbach Fellowship, awarded to Canfield in 1968.
