Recording a priestly decree passed at Memphis in 196 B.C., the Stone was discovered by soldiers in Napoleon's army in 1799, ceded to the British in 1801, and presented in the following year to the British Museum in London, where it has remained a major focus of scholarship and general interest ever since. This first modern facsimile drawing of the Stone has been made in the Museum's Department of Egyptian Antiquities by Dr. Stephen Quirke.
