Known as the "Magician of Color," Chun broke from the male-dominated ink-wash tradition to build a vivid, dreamlike style of chaesaekhwa (Korean color painting), working crushed mineral pigments onto hanji to produce surfaces at once matte and luminous. Her flower-crowned women, her serpents, and the travel paintings drawn from Bali, the South Pacific, Africa and Latin America are instantly recognizable and deeply autobiographical — the cover here reproduces one of her Balinese double portraits. Published in 2007 in the wake of the major 2006 Gallery Hyundai retrospective, this volume gathers her work in full-color plates alongside Korean-language essays and a photographic portrait of the artist. It opens with a foreword by the project's planner, Choi Young-jun, recounting his years photographing her paintings, and with a printed facsimile-signature leaf in ochre.
