First edition, signed and dated 14 February 1996 by Nelson Mandela and additionally signed by Andrew Mlangeni, Walter and Albertina Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Tokyo Sexwale, Judy Moon, Steve Tshwete, Ahmed Kathrada, Patrick Lekota, Mac Maharaj, and Jacob Zuma.All the signatories, save Albertina Sisulu and Judy Moon, were imprisoned on Robben Island for their anti-apartheid activities. Some became leaders of the post-apartheid South Africa - Mandela and Zuma as president, and Sexwale, Maharaj, and Tshwete as government ministers.The book combines portrait photography of the individuals with their recollections of the prison. This is the hardcover issue, considerably scarcer than the paperback.
