Letters on the Spirit of Patriotism: On the Idea of a Patriot King: And on the State of Parties at the Accession of King George the First. A later edition, in a handsome contemporary binding, of these three letters by the prominent Tory politician (1678-1751). This edition includes a six-page dedication by the publisher to Edmund Burke, who had just been elected to parliament for Bristol.These three letters, all written during the 1730s, were first published by Alexander Pope, Bolingbroke's friend, in a privately circulated edition of 1739. Pope subsequently printed 1,500 copies of the Idea of a Patriot King for wider circulation, without the author's approval: when he found out, Bolingbroke attempted to destroy the edition, and when that failed, he published a revised version of the original 1739 collection, which appeared in 1749. The present copy is a new edition of that 1749 publication.
