First collected edition of Evelyn's works, which includes Fumifugium (first 1661, here in its third appearance), the first English book on pollution. This copy has a pertinent agro-industrial provenance, being from the library of John Naylor Leighton, whose ambitious Home Farm represented the peak of Victorian "high farming".Envisioning a beautified London free of choking smoke, Fumifugium - which Evelyn referred to as his "old smoky pamphlet" - is "the most extensive, sophisticated, and ambitious analysis of urban air pollution produced anywhere during the early modern period" (Cavert, p. 174). It is one of two significant environmental texts written by Evelyn, the second being Sylva (1664), on reforestation. Fumifugium was first published in 1661, going through two issues, and was reprinted in 1772 and 1825 (the present edition).Provenance: the wealthy banker and art collector John Naylor Leighton (1813-1889), who inherited and rebuilt Leighton Hall outside Welshpool, Powys, Wales. Part of the estate's redevelopment included the construction of the Home Farm, a model farm at the forefront of the Victorian industrialised "high farming" system, the aim of which was to support the growing national population who were increasingly focused on industrial pursuits.
